Catherine Cohen Is Always Working On Something

Catherine Cohen
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Critically-acclaimed comedian, author and actor Catherine Cohen will play Melbourne and Sydney this November.

The shows follow Catherine’s acclaimed Netflix special ‘The Twist…? She’s Gorgeous’.

Her charismatic persona shines through in ‘Come For Me’, an openly glamorous, decidedly horny musical exploration of what it means to enter your 30s as a woman online, in love, and inspired to romanticise the prospect of freezing your eggs.

Before Catherine heads for Australian shores and, well, comes for us. . . We sat down for a chat.

First, for those unfamiliar, how would you describe your style of comedy?
Oh how I pity the unfamiliar! I do stand-up and perform original, comedic songs. I would describe my work as confessional, glamorous, and gently grotesque. It’s for girlies (of any gender) who want to enjoy their lives for one single second.

What inspired you to cover what you’ll be covering in ‘Come For Me’?
I wanted to explore what it feels like when you turn 30 and ostensibly 'have your sh.t together', but still feel an existential yearning, a deep need for more. . . What does it mean to be a modern woman online, in love and eager to freeze her eggs?

When you begin a new show. . . Where do you start? How do you find drive?
I don’t think of it as a show at first, I just collect pieces – poetic lines, melodies, jokes and accumulate them until it makes sense to throw it all together. Then I see what themes emerge. I don’t find drive, drive has me by the throat! If I’m not working on something I feel sick. It’s not a good thing, I long to detach from external validation. I’m too hard on myself and it annoys everyone around me.

What’s something you make sure you do before every show?
Steam my vocal cords, do my singing warmups, apply liquid eyeliner.

The show has already been met with success. What does that mean to you?
I couldn’t be happier that people are enjoying the new show! 'Come For Me' feels more intimate/personal than 'The Twist...? She’s Gorgeous', so it means a lot to me that people are on board for the next chapter of moi. . .

And what are you most looking forward to about bringing it to Australian audiences?
OMG, I’ve been dying to go to Australia – I was meant to come in 2020, but we make plans and God herself laughs, etc.

Have you been down under before? What are you going to get up to between shows?
I’ve never been down under! Please send me all (chic) must-do touristy activities. . .
