There’s not a moment to breathe as Cal Wilson takes you on a fast-paced, whirlwind tour (not always in order) through her life as an open book.
From the moment she appears on stage, Cal Wilson is energetic, bubbly and engaging, questioning her own choice of attire for the Queensland heat and quickly shrugging it off to question the audience on their knowledge of spontaneous human combustion. It’s easy to forget you’re at a stand-up comedy act and feel more like you’re chatting to a quirky friend, the one who’s so energetic you hardly get a word in, but that’s fine because she’s funnier when she’s allowed to explore her own tangents anyway.
As a seasoned comic who has made audiences laugh for many years, Cal Wilson can explore every hilarious train of thought as it pops up and still always make her way back to the original train to bring it to a comedic head.
Racing back and forth through the book of her life, Cal recounts previously untold tales of cats, kids, bad words, teeth, puss and things under your bed. There was often not a moment to rest, with long periods of the show where your face just hurt from non-stop laughter.
This pace never slowed, even when Cal was directly engaging the audience, asking questions and bouncing back and forth as a single word could send her off on another humorous account.
The whole show felt so natural and interactive that when Cal thanked the audience and waved goodbye, you could catch a few members of the audience, myself included, instinctively start to wave back before snapping their hands down to clap, remembering that this was in fact a stand-up act and not a catch up with your eccentric best friend.
