Best Of Bolskovia Comedy – The Jester Of The Eastern Block Hits Perth

'Best Of Bolskovia'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The small eastern European nation of Bolskovia has a deeply-rooted love of comedy, despite its troubled past of political corruption, organised crime and poverty.

It's only fitting that this love of comedy is celebrated in a 'best of' event, hosted by the best of the best, comedy star Don T'Slagovabich.

Some of the nation's rising jesters will present their comedic talents at Fringe World for four nights of side-splitting hilarity.

Here, Don T'Slagovabich himself gives us a little insight into Bolskovia and the show being presented at the festival.

Tell us a little bit about Bolskovia.
Bolskovia is a very beautiful part of the world, up until the '70s it was fantastic, beautiful regional areas, a high-tech city, just beautiful. Problem is we are situated in the heart of the Eastern Block so when conflict breaks out, we’re in the middle of it. The last few years have been fantastic, so much so we’re in Perth for Fringe World showcasing our talents.

How hard is it to stay so positive and keep your sense of humour in such a troubled area?
We have a lot of amazing storytellers, magicians, comedians, singers, a Perth comedian compared it to going to a party in Armadale, sure everyone is having fun and enjoying themselves, but trouble is never too far away.

And what will you, Don T'Slagovabich, be bringing to the 'Best Of Bolskovia' show?
Lots of energy, high, high energy, you have to be. I used to be well-known for my improv, but it's been hard the last few years because the economy tanked in Bolskovia, and you try asking “what do you do for a living?”. . . We’re unemployed, and the ones who make money are criminal and they refuse to answer the question. So hopefully Perth people are up for a chit-chat and like some of my jokes.

How does Bolskovian comedy differ from Australian comedy?
Australian comedians wear shorts on stage, and dress more casually. In Bolskovia, comedians, we wear suits on stage, to let the audience know “hey, we’re better than you, now listen”. We’re not, but we dress like we are (my Australian friend said this is offensive, it's more cultural difference I feel).

Why do you think this is a good fit for Fringe World?
Because we love our comedy, and we want to showcase it to the world, and what better way to kick off a new prosperous decade than to participate in the first Fringe of the year in the most happening city in the world.

Do you know much about fringe festivals?
I know a few things about a few things, what do you want to know?

How are you hoping audiences react to the performance?
I hope they laugh, enjoy themselves, and hopefully inspire people to come visit and watch a comedy show in Bolskovia when the government re-opens all borders to westerners.

What are three words you'd use to describe this 'Best Of' show?
Fun, high energy!

'Best Of Bolskovia Comedy' plays The Craft – Beer & Cider Garden 13-16 February.
