A certain fictional wizarding world meets satirical magic for adults in the new fantasy parody, 'Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry' at Fringe World in Perth.
No knowledge of 'Harry Potter' materials is required to enjoy the autobiographical storytelling of the new fictional and titular character, only an inquisitive and open mind, one willing to enjoy the realm of messenger owls, robed wizards and flying broomsticks. It’s real, live wizard magic like you’ve never seen it before.
The USA's Tim Motley (best known for his Dirk Darrow shows) is the show’s creator, character comedian and magician. He has been performing professionally for over 20 years as a comedian, mentalist, magician, actor, radio show host, improviser, busker, and variety performer.
"It's about Barry Potter, a down-on-his-luck wizard who peaked at 17, and now finds himself telling his story to muggles one audience at a time,” Tim says of the show’s story. "I've been mulling this idea over for about a decade, since a girlfriend of mine at the time made me watch most of the movies.
“I always wondered why no one's done a magic show about the wizarding world, so I decided why not give it a go?"
Tim has presented many shows at Fringe World over the last decade, noting how its audiences are the most enthusiastic in the world. “There are no better audiences in Australia,” he enthuses, “I can't think of a better place to launch a whole new show, with a whole new character."
As for Tim’s hopes for the audience’s takeaway on Barry Potter, it’s pretty simple. "Wonder at the impossible, and one heck of a giggle,” he says.
'Barry Potter And The Magic Of Wizardry' plays Arena at The Aberdeen Hotel (Fringe World) 20 January-12 February.
