Fresh comedy talent Annie Boyle has already performed to sold-out audiences both in Australia and overseas.

She burst on to the scene as a RAW Comedy State Finalist in 2022, and is known by adoring crowds for her deadpan delivery. She's performed alongside some of our greats, including Becky Lucas, Aaron Chen, Dave Hughes, and Peter Helliar.

You might have seen her at the Sydney Comedy Festival Gala, The Comedy Store, or even on tour with the Sydney Comedy Festival Showcase.

On the topic of the Sydney Comedy Festival. . . We sat down with this darling of deadpan, to chat about her show there in 2024: 'Annie, Are You OK?'.

Firstly, congratulations on making it to the State Finals of RAW Comedy in 2022! What was that whole experience like for you?
Thank you. It was a blast. The Comedy Store is one of my favourite rooms in the country to play in and the line-up was stacked with talent. It was humbling being annihilated by Alexandra Hudson who won. Luckily our paths crossed again a year later at 'Comedy Zone' where I showed her how it’s done.

Further to that, why do you think things like RAW Comedy are important for the comedy community?
RAW is an excellent introduction into the scene and a great way to meet other acts.

Why is comedy something you got into?
It kind of happened accidentally. I moved to Sydney to study acting, and all the roles I was being cast in were the comic relief. It took a lot of people to tell me I should get into stand-up comedy before I eventually did.

What’s something that has surprised you about the industry since being a part of it?
The proximity to comedians that I admire and their willingness to give you support and feedback. It’s pretty unreal when someone like Becky Lucas drops in for a spot during a show.

And what’s your favourite thing about what you do?
I get to do the thing that I love and call it my job. I also have no idea what people in the audience are going through, and how much they need a laugh, so it’s a real honour to be able to deliver that (most of the time).

You’re known for deadpan delivery. Why do you think this method of stand-up works so well?
I spend every day asking myself the same question. You can never tell if the person is joking or not, and that’s always funny.

What can audiences expect in ‘Annie Are You OK?’
The answer to that question. The show is a poignant exploration of grief, all set against the backdrop of a lively nightclub atmosphere. Come for the laughs, stay for the bangers.
