Gorgeously philosophical in ways which you may not even realise for some time after leaving the venue, Alice Fraser’s 'Twist' is one of those special kinds of shows that will squirrel its way into the folds of your mind, nestle in deep and then pop up when you least expect it.
And I mean that in the best, most fulfilling kind of way, of course.
Beginning in an abrupt manner that makes it feel like you’ve entered mid-conversation, Alice sets the tone very naturally; while her style may at first feel jarring, the way she persists in her unique delivery means that we are quickly trained to go along with what she’s got. And it’s a whole lot that she packs into a short hour show; you’ll certainly need a bit of time to collect yourself at the end after riding the rollercoaster of wonderful emotions that 'Twist' takes you on. From allowing space to question what it means to be who you are as a person to regular reminders of our certain mortality, despite being a show that is in so many ways about motherhood, this is also a beautiful show about simply being human and not being entirely sure, in one way or another.
Alice is an enthralling performer, so seeing her on stage and having her take you on a journey through her mind and thoughts is an experience well worth jumping into.
Her well-constructed material is artfully delivered in a manner which makes you feel as if she is working off the cuff, that she is sharing these insightful thoughts with those in the room with her for the very first time that night; but it’s all an act – though a brilliant one at that, which allows the experience she creates to feel special and oh so engaging.
