Amy Hetherington is from up 'where they hide the crazy'... In the Northern Territory.
She's ready to tell audiences all about it and in the spirit of her Melbourne shows, she's listed five of the best food spots in and around the city.
“Melbourne! I am not cool enough to reside in your beautiful city… But I appreciate everything about it.
We don’t have nice things in Darwin, so any time I get to Melbourne I eat all the food and pretend to be a foodie by using #foodporn on all my posts.
I’m easily impressed, if you smash an avocado I’m enthralled. But here are my top five tucker spots in Melbs.”
Brother Burger
There are fiery and political debates in this world. None as intense as who does the best burgers in Melbourne. Personally, I’m on the Brother Burger train. We go there every time we’re in Melbourne. The patties are cooked better than a teenager at Stereosonic. And the PB&J wings are the messiest and funniest time I’ve ever had (and yes that is what she said).
Empress of China
BYO! BYO! BYO! This place is a go-to for me and my mates. We love cheap wine and cheap dumplings, so it ticks all the boxes. I also enjoy the dinginess. And every time I go there someone loud and weird is making a scene and I thoroughly enjoy that people-watching entertainment.
Easey's
Yes novelty! So, Melbourne, so fun, so like nothing we have in Darwin. I love that it’s a train on a building. That’s so silly. Plus the menu is fun. Four different types of chips, three items of Mac n Cheese, mad-as-hell burgers and a cocktail list that makes me think ‘challenge accepted’. I’ll take your gimmicky restaurant any day Melbourne. And you get to be on a train without someone trying to bum a cigarette off you!
South Melbourne Market
It’s often overlooked for the Queen Vic or Prahran Markets… But it’s got a much more chill vibe. Markets are a big deal in Darwin so I have high expectations. South Melbs delivers. Killer giant steam dim sims, amazing seafood and heaven-in-a-mouthful pastries. The place is almost overwhelming with options… But I’ve got time and a pretty impressive appetite so it’s perfect.
Embla
OMG… Not somewhere I can afford to go every time I’m in Melbourne but on the odd occasions I feel like pretending to be affluent it’s the spot. My husband and I go here and let the incredibly knowledgeable staff pick our wines and food and go on a bit of a journey. If you’re not worried about the bill at the end and feel like treating yourself, do it! I don’t care if people think it’s pretentious or wanky… When you’re visiting Melbourne from the NT that’s sometimes exactly what you want.
Amy Hetherington plays Imperial Hotel from 27 March-7 April.
