A pop culture fanatic at heart, Ethan loves to write about all things music, arts and entertainment – especially if the topic is queer (or at least queer-ish)!

Collaboration is king in Your Local Photo Club at Horizon Festival – a photo exhibition showcasing the works of Sunshine Coast and Brisbane-based artists.

It's a one-night-only event presented by Your Local Film Lab, celebrating place and exploring the motives for shooting film, in today's digital age. The exhibition will feature a diverse range of subjects, styles and themes and is a must-visit for photography and film enthusiasts keen to witness some serious local talent.

We chat to Your Local Film Lab Owner Kyle Dobie about this exhibition.

Congratulations on hosting this exhibition at Horizon Festival – what does it mean for you as film enthusiasts to showcase local film photography at this multi-arts festival?
It has been a great opportunity to highlight our local film photographers scene on the Sunshine Coast. As film photographers ourselves we see this as a way of bringing a diverse range of different styles of photographers together – over the love of film.

What is so unique about film photography and what do you see it bringing to Horizon Festival?
Film is all about taking a step back, capturing the moment, telling a story. We see this exhibition as an opportunity to hear the stories from our local photographers and learning about why they have chosen to capture their work on film.

Horizon Festival is all about celebrating local arts and culture. How do you choose which local artists to showcase?
We had an open call for Sunshine Coast photographers to submit their work. Artists are selected based on their submission. We will be including a diverse range of photographers on the night.

Your Local Photo Club will feature a diverse range of subjects, styles, and themes. Can you speak to that a little?
We want to feature everyone from beginner photographers to professionals. Encouraging submissions from all forms of genres. Our last exhibition we had submissions from photos of all genres including; nature, wildlife, surf, documentary, portraiture on display and we would like to keep that in mind when curating this exhibition.

What do you expect visitors to take away from Your Local Photo Club?
A sense of community. We want our audience to walk away from this exhibition hearing stories from fellow photographers and understanding why they chose this medium to tell their story.

Which other exhibitions/events are you excited to visit during Horizon Festival?
Very excited to check out Jake MacRae’s exhibition.

Your Local Photo Club is on at LANTANA Space, Caloundra (Horizon Festival) 2 September.
