Audience favourites and local talents come together for another round of 'Women In Voice – On Tour' at Redland Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) in Queensland.
Irena Lysiuk, Naomi Andrew, Olivia Weeks, Leah Cotterell and Menaka Thomas form the 2022 line-up of musical talents set to entertain in a truly unique set, and quirky comedian Sophie Banister of Brisbaret will play the role of MC for the evening.
It's an evening of superb musicianship, not to mention the perfect way to round out a weekend.
Here, the Women In Voice pen an open letter ahead of their show at RPAC.
“In 1993, Annie Peterson gathered a group of female singers, tired of singing jazz standards in polite cocktail bars or doing backing vocals for the latest indie band in some crowded smokey pub, and decided to put on a show. Just a chance to sing what we wanted to sing, the way we wanted to sing it. This year, we turn 29, which is quite an achievement for a show that is different every year, has no stars and where audiences don’t really know what to expect!
Hundreds of loyal attendees have been coming to every show since we started in the Sitting Duck Café in West End – long before the apartment towers, the bistros and boutique breweries came along. And they keep coming because they know two things – the musicianship and performances will be excellent, and every performer will be sharing something that is uniquely theirs.
Over nearly 30 years, there have been over 100 singers who have brought their stories to the 'Women In Voice' stage, sharing songs and reflections with audiences numbering in the tens of thousands. And each year the line-up is a mix of audience favourites and emerging talent, the familiar and the new, the heartfelt and the hilarious – delivered by the cast as an ensemble, with singers providing backing vocals for each other. A show unlike any other, it is a not-to-be-missed event on the Brisbane performing arts calendar and while we have had our share of big names as part of the show – Chrissy Amphlett, Sahara Beck, Kate Miller-Heidke, and Katie Noonan – the real star of the show is the sum of the parts, the stars of each show are the Women In Voice performing separately and together.
Since 2016, we have been working with regionally-based artists to create home-grown 'Women In Voice' shows throughout Queensland and this year, we will deliver four regional productions – Bundaberg, Cairns, Redlands and Rockhampton - created with local artists singing with their own voice, supported by local directors, musical directors and musicians, showcasing their talents to their own enthusiastic community!
With our 30th anniversary next year, we look forward to continuing, going from strength to strength in Brisbane and building more and more opportunities for regional artists to connect with their local audiences.”
