After mesmerising audiences at Perth Festival last year, West Australian Opera’s Wesfarmers Arts commission, ‘Wundig Wer Wilura’ will hit Albany and Bunbury this November in concert adaptation ‘Wundig Wer Wilura In Concert’.
From award-winning composers Gina Williams AM and Guy Ghouse, ‘Wundig Wer Wilura’ (Wundig and Wilura) is an ancient Noongar story of star-crossed lovers, who break the bounds of love and custom, having their souls banished to Mount Brown (Wongborel) and Mount Bakewell (Walwalling) in York, Western Australia.
Jarred Wall and Jess Hitchcock return, as the titular characters, for these concerts. They’re joined by David Leha, Tyrone Brownley, Charley Caruso, Jarred Inman, Bella McGill, Teresa Moore, Benjamin Gath and Gina Williams.
The concert will be helmed by Albany’s Matt Reuben James Ward, who directed it last year.
“It’s an honour to support the telling of this West Australian story with new audiences in the south-west and in particular in my hometown of Albany,” Matt says.
“We are deeply passionate about the powerful stories opera tells, and when ‘Wundig Wer Wilura’ played in last year’s Perth Festival, we saw how strongly it resonated with audiences and knew we had to share this beautiful story with wider audiences,” West Australian Opera’s Executive Director Carolyn Chard AM adds. “We are grateful to our funders and partners who enable us to tour.”
Tickets are on sale now.
‘Wundig Wer Wilura In Concert’ plays Albany Entertainment Centre 5 November, and Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre 7 November.
