The Western Australian Academy Of Performing Arts (WAAPA) is constantly looking for passionate new students to join their many ranks – whether it's acting, dance, musical theatre, or production and design – and kick-start their future in the industry.
WAAPA's design and costume courses prepare students for industry employment through practical and theoretical learning experiences.
On the costume side of things, WAAPA's teaching environments are unique and can be the stepping stone to a range of costume-oriented careers within the entertainment industry.
There's the Diploma Of Live Production And Technical Services. . . A foundation year of skill-building with classes in costume construction, pattern drafting, art finishing, millinery, drawing, history of theatre, and costume management. Or, the Advanced Diploma Of Live Production And Management Services. . . A skill-building year in management and technical costume areas. Corsetry, undergarments, period costume cutting and construction, costumes for dance, Photoshop, and more.
On the design side of things, students can enrol in the same diplomas as above and expect skill development in scenery and costume, technical drafting, CAD, art finishing, prop construction and more. The advanced diploma sees students further developing their skills and knowledge via design studio, model making, contextual studies, the list goes on.
Also, graduates of the Advanced Diplomas can articulate into a Bachelor Of Performing Arts (Y97 – Production And Design Major). Students who enrol in the Y97 Production and Design degree can attain it in three semesters. Costume specialist classes are delivered, as well as costume management in a live production, industry-simulated environment.
