Verge: WAAPA's Graduating Dancers Celebrate

'Verge'
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

On the verge of their professional careers, the Western Australian Academy Of Performing Arts (WAAPA) graduating dancers are gearing up to celebrate their final season as students in a dazzling showcase.

'Verge' features three contemporary dance pieces and a montage of classical ballet scenes from 'Coppélia'. The students will display technical skill and versatility in these passionate performances.

Among the pieces is a contemporary work by Helder Seabra, a Belgium-based choreographer and former dancer with Wim Vandekeybus and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, while Helpmann-award winning dancer, choreographer and film maker Cass Mortimer Eipper, formerly of Sydney Dance Company and West Australian Ballet, premieres his new piece 'Black Gold'.

Australian dancer and performer Delia Silvan (founding member of Leigh Warren & Dancers) will remount 'Shimmer', which won Leigh Warren an Australian Dance Award for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography.

These three visiting choreographers will be joined by WAAPA's Coordinator Of Classical Ballet, Kim McCarthy, remounting scenes from 'Coppélia'.

“The students will be performing the scenes when the villagers are celebrating the Harvest Festival, and the pageant day when Swanhilda and Franz are married – so lots of joyous dancing!” Kim says.

Featuring a mix of contemporary and classical, performed by a group of talented dancers, 'Verge' is sure to delight.

'Verge' plays Geoff Gibbs Theatre, ECU, 16-23 November.
