A free exhibition is coming to ACMI (Melbourne) in September, celebrating the world-conquering game ‘Untitled Goose Game’ – a game which was made locally in Victoria by House House.

Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition will chart the creation of the global smash hit.

Untitled Goose Game launched in 2019, quickly topping the international gaming charts. Designed for all ages, the game puts players in the role of a naughty goose who wreaks havoc on a quiet village community. Hilarious and wholesome, the game went on to win the 2020 D.I.C.E. Game Of The Year (the gaming equivalent of the Academy Awards), as well as a BAFTA for Best Family and Social Game.

"It's a very strange privilege to see our work commemorated in a public exhibition. Though we design our games to be played by a wide audience, we never imagined that that design process might itself be made accessible within the walls of a gallery," House House Co-Director Michael McMaster says. "It's been such a pleasure working with ACMI to open up our sketchbooks and hard drives and present them to the public like this — we can't imagine a better place to showcase our goose."

The exhibition will take audiences through the game’s development, including its connections to the history of slapstick comedy. Visitors will get to see early sketches and concept art. . . And even have the opportunity to play early versions of the game on display for the public for the first time ever.

ACMI is the perfect place for the exhibition. It hosted early play testing and live events, one which was accompanied by a live score by Orchestra Victoria.

“As a museum of screen culture, video games are at the heart of what we do. We’re honoured to give the goose the exhibition it deserves, revealing to audiences how it was made, and the wider cultural context it has come from,” ACMI Director And CEO Seb Chan says. “Hold onto your hats – let the fun and games begin!”

Honk! Untitled Goose Exhibition is on at ACMI (Melbourne) from 17 September-16 February 2025.
