Triple Treat Theatre: Three Times The Fun

Michelle Zahner in Holepunch
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The acrobatic and comedic talents of performers from theatre companies Black Fox, Violet & Veruca and Cats & Cheesecake will be showcased as a part of Anywhere Theatre Festival.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge of it. We're doing something quite new,” says performer Michelle Zahner, who will appear in ‘HolePunch’ and ‘Bard Wars: The Jedi Returneth’. “We've created a sort of hub venue where there's three different shows going on in one night."

‘HabitAt’, ‘HolePunch’ and ‘Bard Wars’ are the three performance pieces. "For all three shows we've created performances that are something that everybody has some sort of experience with,” Michelle says. "‘HolePunch’ is an office-themed show, so we're basically doing everything you've wanted to do inside an office but you've never been allowed to. We sort of throw things at the managers and do a dance on the tables. All of the things you kind of wish you could do but you can’t. So people connect with it in sort of a fun, comedic way. We're not pointing fingers and we're not making fun of what people do, we're doing it with them."

Michele continues: "I’ve been into some of the rehearsals for ‘HabitAt’, and they're all such strong performers. It's going to be a really cool show and kind of a different feel, a breath before you go into ‘Bard Wars’. Both ‘HolePunch’ and ‘Bard Wars’ are very high energy, quirky, things-happening-every-second type shows and ‘HabitAt’ is a more whimsical and sweet show about the oddities of life."

‘Bard Wars’ is, as its name suggests, a Shakespearean parody of the cult classic ‘Star Wars’. "We all love the show and so we're trying to find ways to make it come alive on stage. There's this scene in the movie where Luke and Leia are chasing a couple of stormtroopers on these speeders through a forest and it goes on for miles... there's no way we could put that on stage. [So] we've had to get creative with Monty Python-esque running like horses [while banging] coconuts.

“I enjoy the freedom that Anywhere Festival gives you. You can take something and run with it and because it's in a venue that's not a theatre it doesn’t cost you the world.”

‘HabitAt’ takes place May 9-10 & May 16-17; ‘Bard Wars: The Jedi Returneth’ runs May 8-10 & May 14-17; and ‘HolePunch’ is held May 8-17. All three shows are at SYC Studios, East Brisbane. For more info, head to anywherefest.com.
