Tracy Greer is a Brisbane-based artist who is making stylish, striking and unique pieces of art with her signature button style.
“I grew up dabbling in all kinds of arts and craft but the Button Style I now adopt came about nearly two years ago. I wanted to create art where the hair had texture and 3D feel. I tried buttons and didn't look back,” explains Tracy. “I love the feel it gives to my art. Taking a simple button turning it into something much bigger and making it the main feature of my art.”
Inspired by pop art of the 1950s, each piece has a classic, retro feel. When it comes to her artistic process, Tracy explains that “to create my art I start with a printed face. Sometimes famous faces, sometimes not. I edit and manipulate the image, changing colour, eye and lip shape. I use acrylic paint for all the highlights and colours to make everything pop and bright. I use buttons for the hair, anywhere from 200 to 2000 on 1 piece of art. I use pen for final sketching. I add real jewellery for earrings, rings or studs. I end up with a cool, textured, bight, fun and unique piece of art. All the things I want my art to be.”
Obviously passionate and engaged with her art, Tracy says, “I want people to smile when they look at my art.” For Tracy, inspiration comes from close to home. “I get inspiration from many places. My brother being one of the places, who is also an artist. A conversation/idea with him can turn into and series of art projects for me.”
While Tracy currently doesn't have any upcoming exhibitions, you can view and purchase her art every Saturday at The Collective Markets and every first Sunday of the month at The Young Designers Market in South Bank.
