Tour The Visual Arts: Adelaide's Art Walk

Leah Grant
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The aim of the Adelaide Art Walk is to showcase emerging artists in a fun environment where you get to meet them and have a talk about the work.

Attendees follow a map to various venues around the West End and discover pop-up exhibitions in cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels. Art walkers will have the chance to create their own artwork along the street with the help of local artists guiding them and providing advice about making street art murals.

There will be live music, street performances, entertainment and fun activities. A chill-out zone with heaters, rustic furniture, DJ sounds and blankets will be available for those who wish to take a break!

Grace Coy, the event organiser, walks us through what to expect.

Where did the concept of Adelaide Art Walks come from?
Art Walks have been around for some time, especially interstate and overseas. The LA Downtown Art Walk is the most famous. My adaptation blends my love for the arts, music, a healthy drinking culture and an appreciation for collaborating with local creatives.

Looks like there are some quirky spaces being used through Hindley St. What kinds of locations can people expect?
Yes, there are ten venues over the Hindley Street West area and the laneways that run from it. There are pop-up exhibitions set up in cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels, as well as, street art installations out on the footpaths and in alleyways. These are all unconventional gallery spaces and it's been fun thinking of the area as a canvas rather than a street. We have had to be creative in the way we curated these exhibitions and designed what people will do on the walk.

Adelaide Art WalkWe hear there’s also live artwork and even music. Can you give us a sneak peek of what’s in store?
Yes there'll be heaps of live artwork. A team of artists will be out on the street creating works in front of people. The Art Walkers are even invited to get involved and help create some aspects of the installations. Inside the venues, most of the artists are creating works or running masterclasses with the Art Walkers (if they want to have a go) in their media. For example, we have an illustrator, Nell Harris, who will be drawing people as a pin-up version of themselves as they come through. There is also plenty of music! We have DJs, bands and buskers throughout the weekend helping to create a fun vibe on the street.

What kind of work will you be exhibiting for the event?
Most of the media styles are photography, illustration, sculpture, canvas painting and ceramics.

West End Art Walk will start at SUPERMILD on Hindley St! Arrive there from 6:30pm for a 7.00pm start and enjoy 3 hours...

Who else can we say hello to along this walk?
All the artists will be there to meet and greet during each event session.

Will any of the artwork be for sale?
Yes, most of the artwork will be available for sale. Some smaller items will be available to take home on the day too!

The Adelaide Art Walk takes place on and around Hindley West, 6-8 August.
