Savoyards Musical Comedy Society have been rehearsing vigorously in preparation for their performance of the 1967 hit film, 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'.
“It's full of music, romance, tap dancing and some innovative choreography from Jo Badenhorst. It's got something for every age group,” says enthusiastic director Johanna Toia.
Those attending Savoyard’s rendition can expect “bright costumes, great music, a lot of laugher and a lot of fun,” according to the veteran Savoyards member.
The cast and crew of the production have been working hard for a number of weeks and Toia believes their efforts have undoubtedly paid off. “It's just looking so good and so polished that I'm really excited about it.”
In the past, many have made attempts at their own versions of the classic movie which starred the talents of Julie Andrews as young Millie Dillmount. Toia however believes that her cast and crew have been able to successfully set their production apart from the rest. “It's not the same as the movie, it's based on the movie. It's just bright and vivacious. Shows these days can be a bit dreary and sad and this one is just full of fun.”
The production is set in New York in the ’20s and tells the story of a young woman who has moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. Audiences are assured they’re in for a memorable evening of new songs, dance numbers and high energy.
“It’s got a contemporary message and a modern show. It's set in the ’20s of course, but it's got things that I think will appeal to everyone.”
Thoroughly Modern Millie is playing now until June 14 at Iona Performing Arts Centre.
