Theatre Lovers Keep It Short+Sweet

Short + Sweet Festival
National Arts and Comedy Editor. Based in Melbourne.
Pop culture, pop music and gaming are three of Jesse’s biggest passions. Lady Gaga, Real Housewives and The Sims can almost sum him up – but he also adores a night at the cinema or a trip to the theatre.

Bite-sized theatre is about to take centre stage in Brisbane, as Short+Sweet Festival serves up a banquet of 65 performances at the Brisbane Powerhouse and The Arts Centre Gold Coast.

The self-proclaimed 15-year-old “sushi train of the performance world” will offer performances across the genres of cabaret, comedy, burlesque and more, but only in slots of ten minutes.

The festival can also be found abroad, travelling to places like Los Angeles, the Philippines, New Zealand, India and Zimbabwe.

Over 200 Queensland artists will come together to stage these performances, and to be a part of the event, artists submit their applications and a lineup is curated to present their work at the festival. Since 2013, audiences for Short+Sweet have doubled, and the appreciation for short art has expanded.

Each script is assessed in a three-stage process, where a shortlist of the best work is curated and determined.

Throughout the festival, anonymous industry judges will view and assess each performances, and audiences are encouraged to participate in the judging process. Between the seven strands of performances, one act from each will be select to perform at the Gala Final at the end of August, where awards will be presented to performers to recognise their talents.

These awards will include Best Production, Best Director, Best Actor and more, covering each aspect of the preparation and journey each performance takes from start to finish.

Short+Sweet aims to recognise local talents, embrace the art of short theatre and commend the abilities of directors and producers on their ability to capture an audience in the short space of ten minutes.

Short+Sweet Festival takes place at Brisbane Powerhouse 14-23 July and The Arts Centre Gold Coast 4-13 August.
