Seductive lighting, skin criss-crossed with leather, bodies bending and flexing and unfurling, and a single vocalist bringing banter and a big set of lungs – The Sparkly Taboo is a mixed bag of girly goodies and deliciously entertaining.
Produced by Aerialicious Entertainment, supported by Vulcana Women's Circus with concept and creative direction by Tami Dawson, the show has a sultry, sassy, and at times, outright silly feel and the roster of acts are a beautifully-balanced offering. Plus you can just tell the performers are delighted to be there, many with a happy ass-wiggling walk or seductive high-heeled strut.
The host for the night was Amy Michaels, and this busty broad was the perfect mix of naughtiness, awkward jokes and razor sharp quips. And her presence was the glittery glue that stuck the girls together.
From a contortionist to an aerial hoop performer, to a burlesque striptease artist to a hula hooper – this show was a pick’n’mix of saucy delights and left you wanting more by the end. There was some light-hearted audience participation, some bawdy jokes and some instructional information on the different sounds we could make as a crowd to show our enjoyment (clapping, screaming, whistling, sexy groans were all encouraged).
The show ran for just over an hour and the time whipped by at a rapid rate. Notable mention must go to Rosie Peaches who performed an absolutely outrageously strip to a song about hairy lady parts (with an accompanying outfit that looked hysterically realistic). I have never seen someone wearing a vagina outfit and look so gleeful and somehow sexy. Truly amazing. There was also talk of vajazzling (you can guess what we’re referring to here) and lots of glitter thrown about everywhere. A show worth seeing with a champagne in hand and wearing your highest heels (this applies to both men and women).
The Sparkly Taboo appeared at Brisbane Powerhouse as patr of Wonderland 3-7 December. Wonderland continues until 20 December.
