'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', the low-budget freak show, cult classic and cultural institution, celebrates its 40th anniversary with a spectacular stage show at QPAC in January.
Following the misadventures of Brad Majors and Janet Weiss inside a strange mansion that they come across on a rainy night, this musical is one of theatre’s most endearing and outrageously fun shows. It opened at London’s Royal Court Theatre on June 19, 1973, quickly developing a cult following, and was adapted into the 1975 film 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show', starring Susan Sarandon and Tim Curry and has the longest-running release in film history. Incidentally 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' even has its own postage stamp.
This version stars Craig McLachlan as Dr. Frank N. Furter, Christie Whelan Browne as Janet and Tim Maddren as Brad. Stepping into the role of Magenta is Erika Heynatz who was nominated for a Helpmann Award for her debut musical theatre role in 'Legally Blonde' and is so excited to be part of this production.

Describe the show in 5 words?
Raunchy, crazy, debauched musical romp.
What is your role and how did you come to be involved?
I play Magenta, the loyal domestic servant (slave) to Dr. Frank N. Furter. She's from outer space, literally! She's an alien from planet Transsexual, Transylvania.
Why is 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' still so appealing to audiences?
The energy of the show is completely unique, there's nothing like it — a rare and exotic blend of rock'n'roll, horror and comedy. It remains an obsession with fans because it encourages people to escape the real world and engage in complete fantasy.

What can the audience expect from this version? How is it different?
They can expect their favourite characters and songs infused with a brand new energy, incredible new theatre sets, a fierce live rock &roll band on the same stage, and a wild night of fun, frolics and frivolity. And to be seated amongst an audience of die-hard fans who are all invited to be a part of the experience.
Describe a typical rehearsal. What goes on behind the scenes?
Vocal warm-up around the piano to get the pipes humming, then a group physical warm-up, which is lots of stretching to prepare for the day ahead. It's usually lots of fun and the dance captain has great taste in music. Behind the scenes there is always plenty of laughter and a few headaches from needing to remain focused.
Who is the craziest cast member?
Craig. My dear Frank N. Furter really does bring his own personal cup of crazy to work every day. And he charms the lot of us while he's at it.
When you saw the movie, who was your favourite character and why?
As a teenager, the character I was drawn to most was Columbia. She is an all-singing, -dancing, ball of brilliantly-coloured energy.
What is your stance on men in fishnets? Could you see this becoming a mainstream trend?
I'm a fan of a man in fishnets because, like all fashion, it's simply an expression of who you are or an aspect of your personality/ ego — real or created. And fashion is meant to be FUN. I see it remaining as a mainstream trend. Everyone looks good in fishnets.
Anything else the readers should know?
Get ready for complete madness!
What do you want audiences to say as they leave?
That the Australian 40th Anniversary tour was the best production and cast in the 'Rocky Horror's history. And they hope to be in the audience for the 50, 60 and 70 year reunion.
'The Rocky Horror Picture Show' will be staged at the Lyric Theatre, QPAC from January 8.
