Lucy Prebble and her theatrical work 'The Effect' has been taken on by Queensland Theatre Company to mixed reviews.
This is understandable when dealing with the volatile topics of love, drugs and depression. But it's not as heavy as it sounds. The story is easily relatable to most and can hit close to the heart for some. The role of medicine in mental health is always up for debate in our society and of course, when something as controversial as anti-depressants is discussed and offered up for dissection, reactions are varied.
This performance features strong and heartfelt performance by Anna McGahan ('House Husbands' and 'Underbelly') who plays Connie, a psychology student and recruit for a drug trial. Wandering into the trial, she has no idea of the implications or what will play out. Adding to the actor mix on stage is Angie Milliken playing the doctor in charge of the trial. Her slow demise is depicted beautifully and just watching her makes me ache. The stage set up also works beautifully and cohesively with the story, with the space feeling authentically clinical.
This is a show that will challenge some of your preconceived ideas about love and depression and helps you appreciate the power of a finely honed performance.
'The Effect' is on at QTC's Bille Brown Studio until July 5.
