Combining crowd-pleasing classics with awe-inspiring contemporary works, The Australian Ballet's 2017 programme promises to whisk crowds away to the adventures of three extraordinary women, plus, delve into the modern world of pure physical expression.

'The Sleeping Beauty' will mark the start of the season, created by Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, David McAllister. His opulent production was met with wide acclaim and sell-out shows upon its launch in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth in 2015. The story of Princess Aurora is brought masterfully to life with dazzling set and costume designs.

Contemporary triple bill 'Faster' will showcase the stamina and technique of the dancers, inspired by the creative vision of three established choreographers. The explosive, Olympic-style pieces will chart the exultant highs and devastating lows of elite athletes, accompanied by an energetic score.

Graeme Murphy's 'Nutcracker – The Story of Clara' is a heartfelt tale of love, loss and lifelong passion, hailed a masterpiece when created in 1992. Dreamlike set and costume designs will reveal Clara's world in full colour, while her journey is underscored by the much-loved music of Tchaikovsky.

'Symphony in C' by George Balanchine is a double bill showcasing the grace and elegance of classical dance, combined with modern speed and Hollywood pizazz. The exuberant work will be paired with a line-up of shorter pieces, producing a smorgasbord of delectable ballet moments.

The season will round off with the Australian premiere of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' by Christopher Wheeldon, bringing the classic tale to the stage in magnificent detail, and blending broadway with rigorous dance. The designer has conjured vibrant costumes, and introduces inventive elements, including puppetry and optical illusion.

The Executive Director of The Australian Ballet, Libbie Christie, believes all five productions are sure to thrill crowds, hailing 2017 an 'ambitious year' that promises to delight existing patrons, and attract new audiences to the art form.

Tours to regional centres, 'Storytime Ballet' for children, community engagement and outreach programs, and free outdoor performance 'Ballet in the Stars' will add to the already jam-packed bill next year.
