Straight And Laced Perth Review @ Fringe World 2020

'Straight And Laced'
Raised free-range on a Darling Downs farm, Pepper has been writing and re-writing and overthinking about lots of topics from her own songs, paraphernalia and bios to rave reviews of John Mayer and sundries since time immemorial. Also: tractors.

Let Paul tell you about the first gig he ever did. . . (insert card trick here). It was about this time that everyone raised their fist in the air and yelled “amazing!”

And so did we.

Even when Jon told the same story (or did we imagine that?)

Mentalism, conditioning, gas lighting – let’s not split hairs as to what exactly they’re purveying. This is a relationship where we’ve paid an agreed price to be amused. And amazed. And we are.

With comedic interjections by the musical themes of the ABC and 'X-Files', and an appearance by a copy of The Australian that repels water like the truth, you’ll get a giggle no matter what you want to believe.

A couple from the audience is subjected to a compatibility test with socks. Paul loves socks, and his are properly lairy (dare you to Google that word to discover its magic alternate definition).

Whether pushing the envelope, or holding the wrong one, or the one just quietly resting on the table the whole show – the trick is in your mind, not theirs. Jon Madd and Paul James have got the goods to make you giggle at Girls School this Fringe World Festival.

If you’re into illusion, elusion, fiction or function, you might just get exactly what you imagine.

Otherwise, and even so: pick a card. . .

'Straight And Laced' continues until 9 February at Girls School (Fringe World).
