Mozart’s ‘The Magic Flute’ will take centre stage at Adelaide’s Her Majesty’s Theatre next month, in a new production presented by State Opera South Australia.
The highly anticipated Australian premiere will elevate Mozart’s magnificent score to new heights, blending music with mythology, symbolism with Hong Kong energy.
Young Tamino embarks on a perilous quest, through an enchanted realm, where nothing is as it seems. He’s armed with a magical flute, and guided by fast food delivery guy Papageno. . . And must navigate a world of wicked queens, mystical trials, and ancient wisdom, in order to rescue his beloved Pamina and discover his true destiny.
“This opera is joyful, profound and deeply human — it asks what we’re willing to go through in the name of love, truth and wisdom – themes that are still relevant in today’s world and will resonate with all ages,” State Opera Artistic Director Dane Lam says. “Bringing this production to life in Adelaide is a celebration of everything opera can be — emotional, bold, cross-cultural and completely alive and I'm sure the people of Adelaide will love it.”
The production brings audience into a world where love must overcome fear, and where enlightenment is earned through courage and compassion. It has captivated audiences for more than two centuries.

“‘The Magic Flute’ story transcends time. We’ve placed this story in a world inspired by the rhythm and movement of a busy Asian metropolis — the energy of a subway, the magic of crossing between the ordinary and the extraordinary,” Lam says. “Opera lets us see the world differently. It reminds us that something mundane can suddenly feel mythical—and that’s what audiences respond to, no matter the century.”
The cast for ‘The Magic Flute’ includes the likes of acclaimed Australian baritone David Greco, soprano Sofia Troncoso, Helena Dix, Danielle Bavli, and Teddy Tahu Rhodes. It’s directed by acclaimed Chinese film, theatre and opera artist Shuang Zou.
‘The Magic Flute’ epitomises State Opera’s ‘Opera Without Borders’ vision, which connects South Australia to international voices, stories, and stages.
Tickets are on sale now.
‘The Magic Flute’ plays Her Majesty’s Theatre 28 August-6 September.
