Stan 'The Man' Lee is fulfilling a 28-year-old promise to visit Australia.
The pop culture icon to end all pop culture icons, Lee co-created Spider-Man, The X-Men, The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Daredevil, Dr Strange and roughly one billion supporting characters and villains, bringing complexity and some semblance of reality to superhero comics in the process.
In 1986, Stan was listed as a Guest of Honour for the one-off Australian Comic Book Convention held at the Sydney Opera House, but a snafu with his plane ticket prevented him from travelling to Australia.
The 91-year-old will finally make his first appearance at an Australian convention at Sydney's Supanova Pop Culture Expo (June 13-15). The Generalissimo is billing this as his farewell tour — after heart surgery in 2012 to have a pacemaker installed, it's quite a commitment for Lee to travel from his home in Beverly Hills to international events, so he's giving Aussie fans one last chance for a meet-and-greet before he says 'Nuff said!' to long-haul journeys.
At the time of Lee's visit, three Marvel films — 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier', 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' and 'X-Men: Days Of Future Past' — will have been recently released, and he'll no doubt have memorable cameo roles in all of them.
There'll also be a special Supanova Sydney exclusive Stan Lee Pop Vinyl figure to celebrate the occasion, and a print drawn by Adam Hughes that will be included in premium ticket packages.
Stay tuned for ticket details. Excelsior!
