One of the most elegant and impactful evenings on Brisbane’s event calendar will return this May, when the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation presents its third annual Light Up The Night Gala.
The event is equal parts style and substance – a black-tie ball raising funds to support victims and survivors of domestic violence and abuse. It brings together allies, business leaders, political representatives, community groups and philanthropists under the rainbow dome of Brisbane City Hall’s Main Auditorium.
Drag queen Vollie LaVont will host the Gala, with high-profile guest speakers like Australia’s Domestic, Family and Sexual Violence Commissioner Micaela Cronin, Australian Human Rights Commission’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner Dr Anna Cody, Queensland Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence Yvette D’Ath, and Victoria’s Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commissioner, Ro Allen.
Research indicates that 60 per cent of LGBTQ+ people have experienced domestic, family and intimate partner violence. 72 per cent never report it.
With one in ten Australians identifying as LGBTQ+, only five cents from every $100 of philanthropic funding goes to the community. Light Up The Night is a chance for people to take a stand, showing support for this important cause.
