Like a sun-drenched glass of nostalgic joy, this show will make your heart fizz and your soul sing.
If ever the world needed an homage to 'Sister Act' – it would be now. The Little Red Company understood the assignment and delivered a show of heaven-sent happiness.
Bringing the best to the front, the all-lady line-up was brilliant in all ways, hitting every note, bringing the heat AND the hilarity. Slow claps and genuflects to the women holding the mics – an incredible group of talented singers made up of Prinnie Stevens, Angela Fabian, Irena Lysiuk and Alisha Todd. Standing beside them was an electrifying live band who all brought the funk, the soul and the groove, consisting of musicians Mik Easterman, JaZZella , Michael Manikus, and OJ Newcomb.

Theatre-goers have been in desperate need of a show to raise their spirits and bring them back home to themselves. People were crying out for a show which made them stamp their feet and sing out loud. People needed laughter and hope and compassion and nostalgia. And so it was last night (17 February). Prayers were answered as ‘Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves’ delivered in spades, with glorious harmonies and heartfelt and skilled arrangements of the well-loved classics by Alex Van den Broek. The sounds coming off that stage were atmospheric, reverential, celestial and it felt like everyone had been touched by an angel. It is hard to put into words how gloriously euphoric the energy was in the venue.
Once you add in sweet and thoughtful commentary throughout, some sassy asides and costume design by Gail Sorronda for a modern touch of visual theatrics, the show was ticking all the boxes necessary for a ten out of ten score.

Even if you’re not a 'Sister Act' fanatic – the show was simply spectacular. Go for the music, but stay for the soul nourishment. If you want to see the holy spirit in human form – go see these women sing.
A show which will make you unapologetically grin like an idiot, feel like your heart is bursting out of your chest, and you might even find yourself wondering if you should perhaps join a gospel choir. If you need a sign to go – this is it.
'Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves' is on at Brisbane Powerhouse until 20 February.
