Channelling the atmosphere of a rowdy speakeasy from a foregone era, 'Scotch And Soda' is a scrumptious cocktail of daring circus acts, theatrical twists, gypsy-soaked sound and party vibes.
Featuring some of Australia's most thrilling acrobats, Company 2's Chelsea McGuffin and David Carberry are joined by Ben Walsh and the Crusty Suitcase Band. The whiskey-infused night is guaranteed to have audiences enjoy themselves almost as much as the performers themselves.
Performer and co-creator of the production Chelsea says that it's a perfect way to toast the Brisbane Festival. "Brisbane is our hometown and the Festival likes to celebrate the party vibes. It is the perfect show for some home-grown party time, right before we take it on an extensive eight-month international tour."
Having trained in dance at the Centre for Performing Arts in Adelaide Chelsea has travelled and trained all over the world. We spoke with the contemporary circus' top shelf performer about the production and how excited she is.
Describe this production in a sentence?
Dexterous beats and highly skilled feats, rolled up in a crusty suitcase circus party like no other.
Your fav line in the show and why?
There aren't many lines in this show, it's all physical action, but MARGARET is a good one to look out for! The Bird act is my fav act as I never know what is really going to happen.
Fill in the blanks:
'Scotch and Soda' will... get you pumping... and leaves you... wanting more... but it won't... leave you empty... and is surprisingly... outrageous in its own crusty suitcase way.
Have you had to work harder since your injury at the beginning of the year (Chelsea tore her cruciate ligament before doing a trick)?
Yes and no. It has been a big six months of recovery and will be a lifetime commitment to the gym and physio. III guess the hardest thing to work through is the confidence. Feeling strong enough myself is one thing, but to let other people start throwing me around again has taken time.
What's your favourite drink?
Mmmmm, Scotch and Soda!
If there was a movie based on David's life, who would play him and what characteristics would they have to channel?
Mmm someone who is dark, moody and serious.
What do you want audiences to say as they leave?
That was F @!*EN great! I want people to be pumped up excited, ready to dance, shout out and have a rockin' good time.'Scotch and Soda' is a show all about the good times. We wanted to make something that was full of good vibes and great beats. It is dark and a little twisted, but nothing more than a late night party can handle.
And what will you be saying to yourself on opening night?
"Roxy, sit!" (Roxy is our new dog, appearing on stage for the first time on stage during the Brisbane Festival).
