Smash-hit musical comedy film ‘School Of Rock’ starred Jack Black and went on to become a comedy classic. . . Which was soon picked up by Andrew Lloyd Webber and turned into a hit Broadway musical.
The show garnered a Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music in 2017, as well as four Tony Award nominations. Now, it’s Melbourne’s turn to experience the rock, when ‘School Of Rock: The Musical’ hits The National Theatre in St Kilda, presented by independent theatre group Theatrical Inc.
This production marks the stage debut for emerging musical theatre performer John Yanko, who takes on the iconic Dewey Finn role (made famous by Jack Black in the film). The 19-year-old was one of the stars of ABC TV’s ‘The Piano’, this year. He’s joined by a talented and diverse young cast of emerging talents.
“‘School Of Rock’ is a show where people can have a laugh, a great time and enjoy themselves. As a huge fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber, I am so excited to be playing the part of Dewey Finn in this incredible show with this wonderful cast and production team.”

The Theatrical Inc show will be directed by Regional Tony Award winer Cody Riker.
“’School Of Rock’ is a show about growing up, finding your passion, and also lifting each other up,” Cody says. “For a musical that is based on a 20-year-old movie, the nostalgia truly elevates this piece. I have loved working with this truly beautiful and chaotic group of kids and adults.”
With a cast of talented kids playing live on stage, ‘School Of Rock’ bursts with energy, humour and heart – as Dewey teaches his students to let loose, find their voices and “stick it to the man”. . . And they end up teaching him a thing or two along the way as well.
Tickets are on sale now.
‘School Of Rock: The Musical’ is on at The National Theatre (St Kilda) 1-9 November.
