Interactive Theatre International and Get Lost & Found presents an immersive, family-friendly production with the stories of one of the world's most iconic authors at its centre.
'Roald Dahl And The Imagination Seekers' stars theatre maker and writer Nerine Skinner, and stage and screen actor Robbie Capaldi, as members of the Ancient Guild Of Taletenders.
Roald Dahl's words are disappearing. Not only from books, but from the minds of children as well! The Taletenders need your help, and through games and imaginative play, you can assist in saving the stories and bringing them back into the books and brains they vanished from.
Expect explorations of some of Roald Dahl's most iconic work including 'The BFG' and 'The Twits'.
'Roald Dahl And The Imagination Seekers' is commissioned and endorsed by the Roald Dahl Literary Estate and is the only interactive show under license worldwide.
“We’re so thrilled to finally bring this show out to Australia, and let everyone help re-create the magic that is Roald Dahl,” Producer Jared Harford says. “As a company, Adelaide and the Fringe hold such a special place in our heart, so we thought where better to perform the Australian premiere than at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.”
Here, show Writer and Director, and Founder of Get Lost & Found Theatre Rob Wilson lets us in on all the details of the show before the Fringe begins.
What can you tell us about this show?
It's really interactive and fun. It's not a sit-back-and-watch affair, it's a really immersive and exciting experience which relies on everyone playing their part, as a lot is at stake here!
Who will this show appeal to?
It's made especially for all the family to enjoy, whether you've just read your first Roald Dahl book, or grew up on them, and those who, somewhere deep inside, still believe in magic.
And how are you hoping audiences respond to it?
We're hoping that Adelaideans will come away having had a really fun time having witnessed the excitement of live theatre, plus the excitement of unplanned moments where we turn to our younger audience members for help, coupled with some really silly bits.
Why do you think Roald Dahl’s stories are still so iconic, all these years on?
I think the themes are really about empowering children to remain inventive, fun and silly and somewhere asking us all to never grow up too much, or at least remember to play once in a while.
What’s your favourite Roald Dahl story, and why?
I love 'Danny, The Champion Of The World' because it's a story about fathers and sons going on adventures in the middle of the night and that's all the little boy in me ever wants. I still find any reason to get up in the middle of the night exciting (but I don't have kids, so please forgive me all the parents who beg to differ!)
What has been your favourite part about being involved in this show, so far?
Just the spontaneity of the audiences and the belief the children bring, it really makes each show unique and memorable.
Why do you think ‘Roald Dahl And The Imagination Seekers’ is a good fit for Adelaide Fringe?
The show is perfect for a festival crowd. We all need, after the pandemic, to put all our adult ideas, fears and concerns about the world that separate us aside, and get behind the shared, the collective, the imaginative. We need to take a leaf out of our kids' books and have fun letting our imaginations loose for an hour.
Describe the show in three words.
Gloriumptious, whizzpopping fun!
‘Roald Dahl And The Imagination Seekers’ plays The Flamingo at Gluttony (Adelaide Fringe) 19 February-20 March.
