There's something about walking into an old cinema.
Not the shiny new cinemas with the plastic seats, foam cushioned and identical to every single other one in the complex. The ones built into the top floor of a mall. No.
The cinemas an older generation still call 'the pictures' when their memories slip to the surface. The one you went on your first group date, and your mother went on her first date, and your grandmother used to serve popcorn at on a Saturday night to earn a bit of pocket money. Maybe you've never been to a cinema like this, but you know the one I'm talking about.
The one the tweens still go to in television shows. The one couples on the Saturday night rom coms first awkwardly hold hands in. The ones you looks at and you can smell the air thick with years of tears and smiles that have accumulated like ghosts that haunt the place.
Filmmaker Gus Berger has leased and reopened the George Cinema on Fitzroy Street, calling it The George Revival Cinema. But without support, after the six month lease is up, who knows what will happen? Gus needs support.
Yes, he's bringing the films back, but he's also taking a pocket of history and giving it life again.
