An exceptional cast supported by live musicians, en pointe choreography and set design makes this Broadway-quality show an absolute treat for Brisbane audiences.
Directed by Tim Hill, this Tony Award-winning musical is being performed at the new Ad Astra Theatre Company space. Attending feels like being let in on a little secret, creeping through quiet streets, peeking in behind a high wall to be hit in the eardrums by impeccable performances.
The story combines well-loved characters from traditional nursery rhymes – Rapunzel, Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Red Ridinghood – and throws them into their common dark place – the woods. The show was perfectly cast, with many a familiar face from the Brisbane theatre scene. While everyone was brilliant, special mentions must go to Natasha Veselinovic as the evil witch, and to both princes (Elliot Baker and Jaya), who played their deliciously shallow roles with arrogance, pomp and aplomb.

The presence on stage of classical musicians served to further elevate the show, and it was a true joy to watch the musical being created. The set design and lighting too added layers, for example using a spotlight shadow to create the looming giant. The use of shadow and screens was a recurring design theme that worked very well to create impact in the smaller space.
With only a few more days to run, this brilliant show is a must-see. At three hours, it is not for the faint-hearted, but the calibre of performance makes every minute worth it.
