Pop culture, pop music and gaming are three of Jesse’s biggest passions. Lady Gaga, Real Housewives and The Sims can almost sum him up – but he also adores a night at the cinema or a trip to the theatre.

Disney films have defined generations with spellbinding storytelling and timeless charm – whether it’s a fearless daughter bringing honour to her family, a pride of lions welcoming a new son, or a sisterhood so strong it can break an ice-cold curse.

One thing these films – and countless others from the studio – have in common, is the magical thread of music. On Friday night (21 March), Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and MSO Chorus took to the Hamer Hall stage to remind a sold-out audience why Disney will always have a place in our hearts.

The evening began with a ‘Disney Memories Overture’ – an emotional, scene-setting compilation of orchestral moments from across the Disney universe. . . Before a set of some of the most iconic tracks from 13 beloved Disney films.

Joining the orchestra and choir to sing these songs were Nick Afoa, Christine Allado, Amy Manford, Ruva Ngwenya and Joshua Robson – a cast of five extraordinary vocal talents who were able to effortlessly match the vigour and emotion of each piece of music performed behind them.

Highlights included a particularly stirring ‘Colours Of The Wind’ from ‘Pocahontas’, performed by Christine Allado. . . ‘Part Of Your World’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’ performed by Amy Manford, ‘I’ll Make A Man Out Of You’ from ‘Mulan’ performed by Nick Afoa, ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ from ‘The Little Mermaid’ performed by Joshua Robson, and ‘The Circle Of Life’ from ‘The Lion King’, performed by the entire cast (but special mention to the incredible Ruva Ngwenya in this one – WOW!).

It was what can only be described as simply magical – these five vocalists each have impressive resumes of stage experience, so there was no doubt they’d capture the hearts of all in attendance. Particularly Christine, Amy and Ruva, who not only sounded ethereal and mesmerising, but sparkled and shone in flowing, royal gowns fit for three Disney princesses – gowns which seemed to embody the layers of beauty captured in the music as they twinkled in the lights. This was a gorgeous added touch to the evening.

It goes without saying that it was a total joy to watch each individual musician in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the wonderful Jessica Gethin. To see them playing their instruments so fiercely, knowing every small (or big) sound coming from every one of them was contributing to this immense, sweeping soundscape of beautiful music, was indescribable. How special that we got to witness such phenomenal talent, right before our very eyes.

Any fan of Disney will find themselves blinking through welled-up eyes after experiencing ‘Disney In Concert’. It’s a remarkable feat to capture the countless emotions felt through this collection of films live on stage, but the mission was accomplished, and then some. A breathtaking, must-see event for everyone in the family. Bravo!
