Review: Circus Fun House @ Melt Festival 2024 (Brisbane)

'Circus Fun House'

A show combining comedy, dancing and circus tricks, 'Circus Fun House' is a delight for younger audiences.

Entering the Pink Flamingo space in Hamilton, right on the waterfront, is a treat in itself. All blushing pink with a giant flamingo statue, audiences of all ages couldn’t get enough of the fairy floss-coloured area, taking photos galore with their families. Moving into the Big Top tent space was equally enthralling, with a giant LED screen showing circus animation while pink-clad stewards sold all sorts of plastic things that could buzz about and light up – for quite a bit of money!

Then the show began. Well-paced for a young audience, the show was helmed by Francois, the Ringmaster, and featured clowns, acrobats, 'lions/tigers' (dancers dressed in printed leotards) and a strongman. The show hit all the familiar notes, and was completely animal cruelty free.

The clowns were a particular hit, and their attempts to do magic. Sometimes failing hilariously, sometimes lighting up the stage with touching success, the duo were delightful. Also inspiring all was the performer climbing up a tower of rickety chairs – then completing a one-armed handstand at the top. Another one setting off the kids giggles was a rubber ducky splashing bath performance.

The erotic shows that are the Pink Flamingo’s mainstay came through in some of the slogans printed around the space (e.g. 'Get Flocked'), and went completely over kids’ heads, but made adults giggle. It also came through in the style of dance performed – not sexy at all, but rather completely in sync routines that befitted traditional Vegas-style showgirls. The bathtub and cage acts could also be amped up for night time shows!

While perhaps too tame for teens, this was a perfect show for under 10s – just make sure you either 'forget' your wallet, or be prepared to pay a small fortune for plastic toys, lollies and pink fizzy drinks! The pester power is real.
