Review: Briefs Factory On The Art Boat @ Brisbane Festival 2024

Briefs Factory On The Art Boat
Luisa is a travel, food and entertainment writer who will try just about anything. With a deep love of culture, she can be found either at the airport, at QPAC, or anywhere serving a frosty chilli margarita.

Once again, the artists of the Briefs Factory deliver a fun, debaucherous and glamorous circus cabaret show – this time on a boat!

Bringing gender-blending bling to the Brisbane Festival while floating down the river, Briefs on the Art Boat is a show not to be missed!

Launching from a pontoon in the heart of South Bank, the first thing you notice about the Art Boat is the colour and lights – no one is confusing this cruise with a Brisbane City Cat! The next thing that stands out is the seven-foot high vision in pink, complete with sparkly pink shoes, enormous hair, full on make-up, and beard. Welcome on board the Art Boat!

The ship is set up with a full bar, complete with customised Briefs cocktails and outrageously good snacks. It has several levels for watching not only the show but the city slide by, and a gigantic catwalk right in the middle of the deck. DJ Candice Lorrae presides over the space, ready to spin the discs of all your favourite Gen X hits.

Then come the glamazons. Briefs Factory has been a staple of the Brisbane cabaret scene for years, and combines drag with circus. Each performer inhabits a character: Fez Fa'anana is Shivannah, MC of the show; Mark 'Captain Kidd' Winmill who – along with his cocktopus – is the sauciest, cheekiest performer in motorbike boots; Rowan Thomas with his Cyr wheel. . . Brett Rosengreen and his spectacular dancing; Diesel Darling who is the perfect 1950s pinup, and special guest, the stunning Serenity (Dylan Rodriguez).

The costumes are sumptuous, and hand-made by designer and co-star, Diesel Darling. There are definitely 'Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert' vibes with the intricacy, drama and sparkles, but a crowd favourite is when the company takes to the stage dressed as stars, seemingly made out of old sleeping bags. The transformation of Captain Kidd from devilish, tongue-wagging sex pot to a cute little padded star was gorgeous.

Briefs is always a crowd favourite whenever they hit the stage. While they are incredibly inclusive and welcoming to all, please double check the session before bringing children as there is full-frontal nudity.
