From the moment we stepped into the Meat Market in North Melbourne, we knew we were in for a treat.
The atmosphere was electric as performers in stunning outfits weaved through the crowd, handing out flags for audience members to hold: 'weirdo', 'freak', 'slut', they declared, providing only a hint of what was to come. But the incredible feats and breathtaking moments that were about to unfold were far beyond what could have been anticipated in that moment.
The perfect setting for a punk cabaret show, the Meat Market really is the perfect venue and please do make sure you head to the bathroom – the immersive details even extend to bold statements added to the mirrors. Snap a selfie and let everyone know you’ve got a ticket to the hottest show in town. And things did certainly heat up quickly, as the performers took to the stage.
Bernie Dieter entered the stage, warmly welcoming the crowd and loosening up any apprehension about what was to come. Her expert skill enabled her to endear herself to even the most nervous crowd members. The opening number created a welcoming space and let us all know that we were all in very safe hands.

What followed next needs to be seen to be believed. The acrobatic skills were phenomenal, a contortionist wowed the crowd by moving her body in ways that made it seem as if her legs were completely separate to her torso, and swords were swallowed and fire was thrown about the place. It was truly exhilarating to take it all in, with these mind-blowing acts being buffered by musical performances from our hostess Bernie. The live band, on stage for the full show, carried us through the performance, really bringing the vibe that pulls this spectacular together.
While there were an array of incredible acts on display across the evening – and believe me, each and every one is worth the ticket price alone – the real star here is Bernie Dieter.
The curation of this affair was exceptional. The show was not simply a string of acts thrown together, it truly felt like a well-curated journey of emotional absurdity, a reminder of the joy we can discover in this world and why it is so important to hold on tight to the wonder in this world, to express ourselves and to fight for the right to live in a way that allows us to be the weirdos we want to be.
Whatever you take away from 'Club Kabarett', there is no doubt it will be profound. It is a truly delightful evening out, yes, but it’s just that little bit more as well. Thrilling, exciting and delivered in a way that makes you feel like you too would be welcomed with open arms if you decided to run away and join the circus.
'Bernie Dieter’s Club Kabarett' should not be missed.
