'Adorable Man: Tu Strange'

Tucked away in The Vault at Fools Paradise, there is an eclectic range of shows. From comedy acts to some unexpected performances, one that catches the interest is 'Adorable Man'.

Featuring Tu Strange from Taiwan, this one-man show is touted as a family-friendly affair. Magician and entertainer, Tu Strange steps into his clown make-up as Adorable.

The audience on the night I happened to catch the show was an interesting mix of families with primary school-aged children, young couples and a range of different faces that wandered in based on the intrigue. As the lights went dark, Adorable made his way to the stage with a torch, setting the tone of mystery and intrigue.

To talk about a show like this is risky, as I don’t want to give too much away, but from the second he ate the fire to put the torch out, I knew there was going to be a certain level of body work. You can see a little on the show flyer, but don’t worry, it truly is family-friendly. Just perhaps keep an eye on your little one after the show if they are particularly adventurous or very into experiments.

Using a sign board to break down any communication barriers, Adorable is exactly as he describes: he truly is adorable. Affectionate and sweet, he invites the audience to be part of the action. Do not be fooled, though, as he runs a tight ship! His magic and illusions take on many forms. From involving feats of wonder that include coins, candy and other various objects, to impressive card tricks and a few very risky tricks that will have you on the edge of your seat.

Along with the magic, there is also a daring aspect to the show. There is fire. There are staples. There is a whole lot of trust in the audience and in his trickery.

This is not the normal kind of show that I gravitate towards at the Fringe, and I was a little worried when I saw the families lining up to get into The Vault, but no matter what your age, 'Adorable Man' can speak across audiences.

It is a cheeky, fun and mind-bending show that will have you stumped on how he was able to achieve such trickery. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and he will also have you laughing and cheering throughout.
