Review: A Very Naughty Christmas @ La Boite (Brisbane)

A Very Naughty Christmas

This bawdy, ocker, cheeky variety show is a treat for Brisvegans in search of adults-only Christmas cheer.

A variety show with reimagined Christmas songs, comedy skits, and exotic, dance-inspired numbers, A Very Naughty Christmas is in no way wholesome, but it is a lot of fun.

Steve Rooke stars as Santa, who does very naughty things with his reindeer. . . and elves. . . and potentially children in shopping centres (audiences should be aware that no jokes are off limits in this show!).

What Santa lacks in singing and dancing prowess, he more than makes up for with cheeky charisma. Many an audience member would like to find him in their stocking.

Elf Aurélie Roque and her powerhouse voice provided incredible musical gravitas, along with a live in-house band. Joining her in the musical stakes is Emily Kristopher, who also has fantastic comedic chops.

Her skit as a HR manager for Santa's workshop was delightful, as was her turn as an inappropriate romantic obsessive (in a skit that a man could not get away with!). Her performance recalled Annie Murphy's Alexis from 'Schitt's Creek', in the best way possible.

Another standout was Lachlan Greenland, who wowed in head-to-toe sequins. His singing and dancing – and eight-pack – were flawless; he's definitely one to watch in the Brisbane theatre scene. Lauren Jimmieson was perfectly cast as kooky creepy elf, who just wants to be rich and powerful, goddammit.

While A Very Naughty Christmas has toured the country and made it to London, the producers clearly tailor the script to local audiences. The play is surprisingly political, with songs about the cost of living, Santa loving poor people less, and lots of meaningful comments about the state of the justice system for child offenders.

All of these were very much appreciated by the lively audience. Speaking of audience, there is a LOT of audience participation. Those seated at the tables at the front of the stage beware – it will be insinuated that you appreciate cucumbers for more than their fresh summery taste.

This isn't a tasteful burlesque, in fact the show revels in its high cheer tastelessness. There are also sex toys galore, and simulated acts, but no nudity. Audience members are asked not to take photos, and an usher will supervise deletion of any that are taken of the performers during the show.

A Very Naughty Christmas season at La Boite (Brisbane) plays until 18 December, 2024.
