It’s easy to forget that behind every iconic movie scene, there’s a painstakingly crafted piece of music subtly raising the tension.

When there’s thrills and spills, it’s easy to overlook the score, and yet, the scenes we love would be vastly different without their accompanying music. To truly understand the way music impacts movies, there’s nothing quite as perfect as seeing the score performed live, alongside the movie.

On 6 February, the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre played host to an action-packed orchestral event showcasing one of the most iconic movies of the modern film age. Think all the staggering beauty of an orchestra at the peak of their abilities, but with all the fun of a night at the movies including hot, buttery popcorn.

John Williams’s epic score for ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark’ was the star attraction at ‘Raiders Of The Lost Ark - With Live Orchestra’, as the Queensland Symphony Orchestra brought the magic of William’s creative work to jaw-dropping life.

The movie itself is a classic, managing to successfully navigate the fine line between action-comedy, without trying too hard to get a laugh. It’s been 35 years since Indy first began his quest for the Ark, and though a lot has changed in the world of CGI, the story itself is just as fun today as it was on its opening day.

Even if you’ve seen 'Raiders' a thousand times, and know the lines by heart, seeing it with the score performed live changes the way you see the movie. When the music is given a little more pride of place, it gives you a chance to realise the genius of Williams’ work.

As Indiana Jones fought his way across the globe, guests were given the chance to savour the soundtrack to his every move, the highs and the lows echoed seamlessly by an orchestra capable of transforming a comedic adventure into an edge-of-your-seat affair.

Conductor Marc Taddei was in fine form, leading the Orchestra through a flawless performance, and helping transform a beloved movie into a once-in-a-lifetime event.

And judging by the conversation from guests at the end of the night, more than a few movie fans have found themselves with a newfound love of orchestral music.
