Polly & Esther Bring Meaningful Chaos To Adelaide Fringe

Polly & Esther
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and some beyond.

A chaotic drag theatre cabaret musical extravaganza is approaching the Fringe.

Iconic Welsh drag queen duo Polly Amorous and Esther Parade are set to bring their camp, chaotic show to Adelaide, conquering down under with a unique flavour of satire and silliness, campy pop bangers, and heartfelt messaging surrounding queer identity and chosen family.

A mother-daughter drag duo are thrust into the spotlight, thanks to an unlikely brand deal with a villainous, low-fat yogurt-based probiotic gut-heath drink. As the relationship develops, satirical spotlights are shone on the dangers of pink-washing, and finding chosen family in unexpected places.

“Having spent a year in Australia on a working holiday pre-COVID, it feels really full circle to bring our show celebrating the magical chosen family particularly with queer people to the place I consider my second home,” Polly Amorous says. “Plus, any opportunity I get where I can sing Avril Lavigne to an audience every night is a win in my books.”

Polly And Esther 2

'Polly & Esther' was originally developed as part of the Pleasance Theatre partnership scheme in the UK. It has enjoyed a sell-out run in Cardiff, as well as a critically acclaimed debut at Edinburgh Fringe.

“After the success of our run in Edinburgh, it feels almost fictional that we get to travel so far to tell our little story of how two queerdos fell in platonic love and became the best of friends,” Polly continues.

Esther Parade adds, “We’re living in a time when drag is more popular than ever, yet LGBTQ+ individuals continue to have their rights questioned and threatened every day.”

“With our show, we want to give an insight into the lives of two hilarious drag queens, in an abundant and joyful package, while hopefully delivering some home truths about the importance of sticking with your chosen family through thick and thin, and standing up for what’s right.”

'Polly & Esther' plays The Lark at Gluttony - Rymill Park (Adelaide Fringe) 11-23 March.
