Emerging artists will 'plank it out' next month at Plank Canvas, an exhibition combing both art and skateboards resulting in something just a little bit different.
Founded by two Brissy boys Michael Fenwick and Jimmy Kakanis after a watery death of a beloved skateboard, Plank canvas aims to to support local emerging art by giving 10 artists a unique hand-crafted board, then have them paint away to their heart’s content.
“The first piece of art I ever bought was on the bottom of my very first skateboard. I cherished that board, I cherished it until the day it died a soggy Bulimba Creek death,” Jimmy says.
“I searched long and hard to get that precious feeling back. So when I couldn’t find it after years of skating, my friend and I started crafting our own skateboards. We vowed to make each board unique, and we vowed to make each board mean something special to the person who rode it.”
After co-founding Cottage Skateboards, Jimmy says it's important for people to be able to buy a board they can connect with and really cherish, and it's something that is currently difficult to find. “At the end of the exhibition we all gather together at The Southside, have a gawk and a beer, and bask in the pleasant nostalgia of it all and hopefully 10 people walk away with their first piece of art, and get to cherish the shit out of their new board until it dies,” Jimmy says.
Plank Canvas will feature the work from locals artists such as Plump Oyster, Ella Mobbs, Lucinda Wolber, Barek, Edouard Lee, Ben Samios, Eluan Waldron, Jonathan Huybers, Sam Cranstoun, J. Litten Kotte.
On display Saturday April 6 – Saturday April 13 at the Southside Tea Room, Plank Canvas is free for all to attend.
