On the 23rd August, the Astor Theatre announced that it was going to be closed down.
The company that serves as a landlord has other ideas for how the building should be used, according to a petition started by Ted Sariklis.
"One of the last independent film houses in Victoria that has brought immense joy, wonder and a memorable cinematic experience to the Australian public since 1936, announced that it was going to be closed down because the company that serves as a landlord for the building used by the venue, Ralamar Nominees Pty Ltd, has other ideas for how the building should be used.
If this petition gets enough signatures, we may be able to show them that there is enough public support to justify the theatre not being closed down. This is one of the venues that has managed to preserve Australian culture through film and the idea that they would want to close it down is absolutely heart-breaking."
