Expression Dance Company's latest production ‘The Red Shoes’ is inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's legendary gothic fairytale and the 1948 Academy Award-winning film. This is a twisted tale of delusion and reality intertwined with beauty in a stunning romantic fantasy and stars Elise May in the lead role.
Can you describe the show in five words?
Striking, Theatrical, Passionate, Obsession, Madness.
What is your role and how did it come about?
I play the role of 'Victoria' a woman who we witness at various stages of her life, who becomes obsessed with a pair of red shoes. She is driven to madness throughout the work, as she becomes caught between her love of her art form, and her desire to lead a normal life with the man she has fallen in love with.
You have inhabited many roles in your career. What is this one like to perform?
This role is really mentally and physically challenging. The character's emotional journey throughout the piece is quite intense, as she is really pushed to the edge of her sanity at various moments throughout the work. I think this role requires a certain versatility, the ability to concentrate on the emotional story telling but also be able to harness the physicality of the character and the interactions with the other characters on stage.
What prep (mentally or physically) do you need to do before each performance?
I have been working with an expert personal trainer who is taking me through a gruelling cardiovascular program to prepare me for the demands of this show. He has previously had a long and successful career as an elite ballet dancer so he understands the type of fitness and intensity required for the stage.
Best advice about life you've received?
As an artist I love the quote “creativity takes courage” (Henri Matisse). I think there is so much to be gained by putting yourself out there and not holding back. Like anything in life, it can be scary, exhilarating and can lead to the ultimate in self-discovery.
How important is it to incorporate performance and art into our everyday lives?
I really love the idea that creativity can bring meaning to our lives. Such a big part of my life has been art-making and performance that I sometimes forget that not everyone has the luxury of having art and creativity in their life. I am constantly intrigued by the nature of collaboration and the way great things can be achieved when people work creatively and begin to problem solve together. I can't help but think that it is the way forward to a future where our everyday lives are more fulfilling and rewarding.
How do you balance passion and obsession as a professional dancer? Do you have any secret obsessions?
I'm obviously passionate about my craft as a performer, however I like to think that I am able to achieve a kind of work/ life balance in order to keep things in perspective. My latest most enjoyable things to do, outside of my working life are gardening, cooking, reading and spending time with family and friends.
Why should people come see this?
It promises to be a rich and unique experience. I'm really excited about it. I hope that others will share my sense of wonder and excitement about this production.
'The Red Shoes' is being staged at the Playhouse, QPAC from July 18-26.
