EYG is an insight into an Adelaide glass artist’s practice. Emma Young reflects on nostalgia for childhood memories and the desire to connect with others.
This is Emma Young’s debut solo exhibition after being awarded ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2018 Urban Cow Studio Art Prize.
Here, Emma pens an open letter about the exhibition.
“As a glass blower and designer, I use vivid colours in forms that serve both function and aesthetic, showing pride and affection for unique Australian experiences. With my primarily utilitarian glass work, I aim to convey a sense of familiarity and innocence to achieve connection with my audience.
EYG is my debut solo exhibition, where I aim to give thorough insight into my eight-year career so far as an artist. I endeavour to share the stories and meanings behind my artwork, and strive to find unexpected connections with those who view the work.
Inspired by experiences throughout my upbringing in Adelaide, I hope to share treasured memories and expose my vulnerability and frivolity to the viewer. The exhibition will include new pieces for my Watermelon series. This is playful yet personal work, referencing the joyful nostalgia of eating watermelon in my grandmother’s backyard as a child growing up – a staple Aussie summer fruit.
Further artwork debuting in EYG comes from reminiscing on recent travel with my maternal grandparents to their country of birth. New and established artwork is guaranteed to excite, no matter what. I also invite anyone interested to watch me blow glass at JamFactory.”
