The Round Room Revolution is a one-day event showcasing the talents of South Australian artists who have lived through experiences with mental health struggles.
It's a pop-up art gallery with a twist: all the artworks are created on a round canvas to symbolise support circles, acceptance and community. It coincides with the national R U OK? Day, which encourages people to take time out of their day to talk to someone they love about how they're going.
Here, South Australian artist Helen Plunkett-Clift from HArt Room Studio pens an open letter about the event and her own struggles.
“Art is something that should be enjoyed by everyone. It should brighten our homes, energise our streets and enrich our lives, but all too often it remains unseen and tucked away in a gallery. For this reason I have often wondered how I could bring my art into the light of day to inspire and connect with a new audience. This sparked the idea of an outdoor pop-up art gallery in the city.
Like so many people from all walks of life, I have struggled with my mental health in one way or another during my life and last year I was fortunate enough to meet a group of amazing local artists who had also seen dark days and used their art to get them through it. The level of talent they displayed was astounding. It was then that I decided people need to see this and what we're capable of despite our battles.
The basic aim of The Round Room Revolution is to raise awareness of mental health and help address the stigmas associated with mental health issues. It is an uplifting show full of colour and stunning imagery by these talented local artists.”
