New Beginnings

After celebrating a highly successful first edition, New Beginnings returns, spotlighting emerging creative voices and daring new ideas.

blue joy theatre co. presents the second edition this year – it's a dynamic creative development programme dedicated to supporting and nurturing emerging artists.

“New Beginnings is all about creating new work, without the pressure of perfection. It gives artists a vehicle to try out something new, something completely different to what they’re used to,” Producer Anja Starkiss says.

New Beginnings is designed as a platform for fresh voices, and will feature transportative musical numbers, immersive installations and poetic theatrical performances in four new works on the Fringe World stage. The 2026 iteration is curated by Fringe World 2025 winner Mohammed 'Ayo Busari'.

Plus, it has a strong emphasis on partnerships between BIPOC and non-BIPOC creatives.

“A lot of emerging artists find it difficult to get that first story out there,” Anja says. “The Fringe audience makes it possible for these stories to be shared with a wide range of people. Putting New Beginnings in Fringe gives emerging BIPOC artists that first shot at making an impact.”

Audiences can expect a smorgasbord of creative exploration, artistic growth, and cultural celebration – culminating in a work-in-progress showing.

New Beginnings is on at Subiaco Arts Centre (Fringe World) 6 February.
