The 2022 programme for National Circus Festival has arrived, bolstered by the inclusion of acclaimed circus company, Gravity & Other Myths.
It’s been quite a long road since 2021 – when the festival was cancelled due to COVID, before the company and its festival site was ravaged by the northern New South Wales floods, in February 2022. Now the festival returns triumphantly, in magnificent style.
One of Australia’s premier acrobatic companies, Gravity & Other Myths, will present their staple production ‘A Simple Space’ at National Circus Festival. It has achieved momentous international success and been performed more than 850 times across 34 countries.
Also, Victoria’s Circus Trick Tease present ‘Werk It’, a celebration of spandex, high-vis, vitality and vigour – and more sass and swagger than a TLC music video. The Brunswick Picture House will present ‘Cheeky Cabaret’, a two-hour adult show smashing together circus, vaudeville, comedy, new burlesque and everything in between.
Juggling sensation Joe Fisher, rivalled trio Debra Batton, Sharon Gruenert and Spenser Inwood, and internationally renowned natural exhibitionist The Space Cowboy all add to the celebrations.
Some of Byron Shire’s brightest stars will call the National Circus Festival home as well, like Dr Hubble, Hannah Richards, and Spaghetti Circus Performance Troupe.
Adding to the festival weekend will be a collection of on-site activations and marvels. Joining the arrival of The Famous Spiegeltent for the first time in the region, is The Wheel Of Death from Warren Brophy. The Globe, a fully interactive, retired hot air balloon, will be a sensory delight, and experimental play space.

Music will come alive throughout the festival too, in a team-up with Mullum Music Festival. Yidinji/Bar-Barrum far North Queensland artist The Boy Of Many Colours will combine the sounds of distant past with the modern age. Plus, Jamie MacDowell & Tom Thum combine their beatbox and singer-songwriter abilities to create genre-defying music.
“After the past 12 months it’s great to come back in such a strong fashion with an amazing program,” National Circus Festival Director Alice Cadwell says.
“We are looking forward to celebrating this year’s National Circus Festival. It will be a chance for the whole community to come together, enjoy world-class shows featuring amazing artists, wonder at the 25-metre inflatable globe, join a workshop, and watch out for The Wheel of Death.”
“We have the Outdoor Cinema, music acts in collaboration with Mullum Music Festival and The Famous Spiegeltent! It will be fun for the whole family, unexpected delights, great food and coffee, and so much more.”
Tickets are on sale now.
The 2022 National Circus Festival runs from 30 September-2 October at Mullumbimby Showgrounds.
