'LOVE LUST LOST' from Broad Encounters Productions is an other-worldly, expansive experience.
It brings an ensemble cast of actors together to perform, but not in the way you might be used to – traditional theatre is truly flipped on its head, as attendees descend into a new world, a world where stories collide.
New life is breathed into tales created by the likes of Jules Verne and Hans Christian Andersen, as this motley crew of weird and wonderful creatures weave in and out of corridors and doorways to entertain all aboard the EV Nautilus.

Not fond of the theatre? Never fear – here, Broad Encounters Productions Creative Director Kirsten Siddle pens an open letter to those with a little trepidation about the whole thing, to assure them that 'LOVE LUST LOST' strays far from the expected.
“Dear people who hate theatre,
Do you hate going to the theatre? Some of us love it, some of us despise it. Either way, a conventional night at the theatre is not what we’re offering you.
Remember the delicious delight of being introduced to a new playground as an eight-year-old? The electricity you felt exploring a foreign city for the first time? The thrill of unravelling the layers of plot in your favourite book? The revelation of savouring a fresh, new favourite cocktail?
A curious and creative, fun-fuelled life, that’s the secret . . . With a lust for adventure and a longing for the pleasures in life. That’s what I strive for, and encouraging audiences to get curious, creative and adventurous is what our art-making, in the form of immersive theatre, is all about.
Far from the formal proscenium arches of conventional theatre, immersive theatre challenges you to involve all your senses. We create entire worlds and realms that activate and engage the audience through touch, scent, sight, sound and taste . . . in fact we also make use of that sixth sense (Oooooh!).
We layer visual art and film, music and sound design, circus and dance, text and scent to create a world where the audience are drawn in and become players alongside our cast of mischief-making protagonists.
It’s true, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but we believe fortune favours the brave. When your curiosity, creativity and imagination are ignited you are rewarded with multi-tonal, multi-sensory and multi-layered story telling. And above all, it is designed to be fun!
In our latest work, 'LOVE LUST LOST', we set ourselves some huge challenges. Could we create a piece with a strong narrative/story (the unicorn of post-modernist immersive practice); could we create multiple paths through that same strong narrative; could we bring the richness, humanity and emotion of our source material (Jules Verne’s 'Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea' and H. C. Andersen’s 'The Little Mermaid') to life; could we physically and financially mount this epic story involving 1,500sqm of designed space, seven hours of performance content and well over 100 creative minds and wages involved?
What I can promise you is that your curiosity and creativity will be activated and you will want to explore. My only tip? This is fun-fuelled entertainment and there are no wrong paths. Get your inner child out for the night – explore, revel and get amongst it!”
