'Love Hurts' is a whirlwind.
It's an exploration of love, pain, sexual misadventures and more, in a world where we 'swipe right' on our dates and hope for the best. They say 'love is pain' and in this day and age, that has never been more accurate.
Here, show creator and performer Emily Kristopher (who created the show with Kat Davidson) pens an open letter about romance-gone-wrong ahead of 'Love Hurts' at Wonderland Festival this year.
“'Love Hurts: Stories of love, sex, and other utter tragedies'.
Kat and I wanted to create a show that explored common themes like first dates, relationships, breakups, and everything in between – all the things that are so relatable if you are a human being. We want our audience to laugh, cry with laughter and cringe alongside us.
Sex can still be a bit of a taboo subject even today, but for our show we decided to embrace all things fornication, titillation and X-Rated. We want to celebrate the joy of sex for all it can be in its glorious messiness.
Sex is not porn. It’s not about pretty lighting and ‘finding the button’.
It’s about experimenting, getting it right and getting it oh-so-wrong and making each other laugh. If both parties (or all, if you’re that way inclined) want to have a good time we need to be able to talk about it and 'Love Hurts' does exactly this.
We put the conversation on stage and open it up in a big way and achieve excellent results. As we continue to travel with this show, our show itself evolves to incorporate the best, funniest and most painful stories from you, our audience. So, at the start of the night, we ask you to dig deep and bare those beautiful bruises and share your story with us – we are not above bribery. We will pay in prizes for the ones that get a LOL’ing.
We talk about broken hearts, revenge and share in the gloriousness of badly written romance novels. We dance, we sing, and all for the cost of a ticket – I can assure you, as an unbiased person, it’s well worth it.
'Love Hurts' is not about smut and being filthy for filth’s sake. It’s about being honest, real, raw and funny. Covering everything from the wobbly to the wanton, there's something for everyone!
Be assured, you’re in safe hands, we have lots of experience… With the comedy. Obviously.
