The historic HMAS Diamantina at South Brisbane will play host to supernatural stories of the sea in a new show as part of the Anywhere Theatre Festival.
'Kiss Of The Vampire Squid' is an improvised comedy based on nautical lore, strange and unusual sea creatures, and the monster and ghost stories spun by sailors of years gone by. Act/React Director Wade Robinson says the world of water posed great possibilities for both comedy and horror, all accompanied by live piano accordion music.
“Kiss Of The Vampire Squid' was mostly inspired by my love of myths and legends, but also by my young son’s obsession with 'The Octonauts',” he says. “There really is so much we don’t know about the ocean, and it remains a source of wonder, curiosity and fear.
“We wanted to create a show that would allow us to build on audience ideas of what monsters could lurk beneath the waves, and how that might affect a ship’s crew.”
Wade says the immersive show would be fun for both new visitors to the HMAS Diamantina, and those who had never experienced it by night.
“The audience will board the ship with us, and help us bring to life monsters or mythical creatures like krakens, mermaids, giant squid, ghost ships, leviathans or whatever their imagination conjures.”
